Sotheby’s Photographs Auction Results; 2018

Yesterday saw Sotheby’s first Photographs auction of the year, held in New York and realising a sales total of $3,126,740. The auction included work by artists such as Cindy Sherman, William Henry Fox Talbot and Man Ray.

The most expensive lot sold was William Henry Fox Talbot’s The Pencil of Nature which was a complete set of six fascicles illustrated with 24 salt prints. The lot surpassed its original estimate of $150,000-$250,000 by selling at $275,000.

Other top sales were Robert Frank’s New Orleans (Trolley) (featured), which also surpassed it’s estimate of $100,000-$150,000 by selling for $200,000, and Man Ray’s Minotaur which sold for $175,000 with an original estimate of $150,000-$250,000.
