Sotheby’s Contemporary Photographs Auction Results; Oct 2018

Yesterday saw Sotheby’s first photography auctions of the season take place, with Photographs and Contemporary Photographs auctions.

The Contemporary Photographs auction took place in New York with 76 lots on offer from artists such as Hiroshi Sugimoto, Marina Abramovic, Wolfgang Tillmans, Thomas Ruff and Andreas Gursky, with an overall sales total of $1,260,875.

The Andreas Gursky print, Garadsee (Lake Garda, Panorama), was billed as the leading lot with an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000, selling for $5,000 over its top estimate at $125,000. However, Gursky’s print was not the most expensive sale. Untitled 5 (Icehouses) by Catherine Opie tied Gursky’s hammer price for $125,000, out-performing its original estimate of $20,0000-$30,000. While Sonya, Poles (Montauk) by Michael Dweck was the most expensive sale at $168,750 with an original estimate of $50,000-$70,000.

The top ten most expensive sales at this auction saw Catherine Opie and Michael Dweck both feature twice, while prints by Wolfgang Tillmans, Frank Thiel, Carrie Mae Seems, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Ruud van Empel rounded out the top ten.
