Round-Up of Recent Auction Results
Though the next round of Photography auctions has not yet begun, here is a look at some recent auctions which have featured photographs for sale:
Christie’s Collection of Melva Bucksbaum on 17th October, online
The Collection of Melva Bucksbaum: Post-War Contemporary Art, Photographs and Prints was held online for over a week, with a host of well-known photographers’ work available within the sale. The auction brought in a combined total of $1,760,500. The highest selling photographic lot was by Thomas Ruff selling within its estimate of $15,000 to $25,000 for $18,750. Cindy Sherman’s work took the next two slots for most expensive photographs sold. These were from her Untitled series with the Untitled 406 selling for $17,500, below the estimate of $20,000-$30,000, and Untitled selling for way above its estimate of $6,000-$8,000 for $16,250.
Sotheby’s The Midas Touch in London on 17th October
Though only one photograph was sold at this auction, the price realised was much higher than the top three selling photographic lots at Christie’s auction combined. The Serra Pelada, Gold Mine, Brazil, 1986, by Sebastiao Salgado sold for £118,750 with an original estimate of £80,000-£120,000.
