MoMA: Tracing Photography’s History Auction Results, July 2018

Christie’s final MoMA auction finished this week with the sale of 93 of 99 lots, realising a sales total of $303,375. The auction was held online over 10 days with lots from artists such as Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Brassai.

The most expensive lot was Cape Horn near Celilo, Columbia River, Oregon, 1867 by Carleton E. Watkins an albumen print, which had an original estimate of $5,000-$7,000 but sold for over 20 times the lowest estimate at $100,000.

Ansel Adams’ Mount McKinley and Wonder Lake, Denali National Park, Alaska, 1947 was the second most expensive lot with an estimate of $4,000-$6,000 and a hammer price of $17,500.

Italian Immigrant from Albania, Ellis Island, 1905 by Lewis Wickes Hine was the third most expensive lot with an estimate of $3,000-$5,000 and a sale price of $8,750.
