‘Important Photographs…’Auction Results

Another expensive photography sale, this time at the ‘Important Photographs from the Collection of Donald and Alice Lappe’ auction

Last week was a hectic week for Christie’s Photography department. As well as 3 auctions related to the MoMA photography sales, there was also the sale of 45 Important Photographs from the Collection of Donald and Alice Lappe. These photographs were far-ranging in their subjects and authors, from Social Documentaryby Dorothea Lange to Landscape Photography by Ansel Adams. Other photographers whose works were on sale included Annie Leibovitz, Edward Steichen, and Eugene Atget.

The highest bid went to Edward Weston’s ‘Betty in Her Attic’ print (featured), which went under the hammer for $732,500 making it one of this year’s most expensive photographs, but not the most expensive photograph to sell that week – that honour went to Gilbert and George’s ‘Red Morning (Hell)’ which sold for £848,750 at Christie’s London on the same day.
