Christie’s Photographs Results; Oct 2018

After the completion of Christie’s An American Journey auction, came the first of Christie’s Photographs auctions this season. Taking place on 5th October in New York the auction hosted works by a range of photographers such as Lewis Baltz, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Josef Koudelka and Sally Mann. The auction realised a sales total of $3,297,562 with colour prints making up half of the top ten lots sold. 

The most expensive lot was Identical twins, Roselle, N.J., 1966 by Diane Arbus which sold for $32,500 more than its original estimate of $500,000-$700,000 for $732,500 making it the most expensive sale of the year, so far. Selling for less than half that amount came William Eggleston’s Memphis, 1972 print for $372,500 with an original estimate of $200,000-$300,000. Rounding out the top three came Irving Penn’s Woman in Moroccan Palace (Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn), Marrakech, 1951 which sold for $372,500 with an original estimate of $300,000-$500,000.

Work by Thomas Ruff, Robert Mapplethorpe and Margaret Watkins also featured in the top ten lots. View all the lots from this auction at Christie’s website here.
