Christie’s Photographs Auction Results; 2018

Last week saw the first major photography auction of the year take place at Christie’s New York with 116 lots available in their Photographs auction. The auction took place on 6th April with a sales total of $3,432,000.

Unsurprisingly Richard Avedon’s Dovmina with Elephants print was the highest selling lot at the auction. An earlier edition of the photograph sold for over £1 million in 2010, so Christie’s gave this particular edition (14 of 50) an estimate of $300,000-$500,000, leading to a hammer price of $456,500

The second highest hammer price went to Aspens, Northern New Mexico, 1958 by Ansel Adams, which realised its top estimate of $250,000. Followed by Robert Mapplethorpe’s Calla Lily, 1986 which had an original estimate of $80,000-$120,000 and sold for $118,750.
