Christie’s Photographies, Autumn 2020
Christie’s final Photographs auction of the year took place in Paris with 130 lots available from artists such as Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, Irving Penn, Wolfgang Tillmans, Thomas Ruff and Constatin Brancusi.
Some of the most famous and iconic images from the 20th century are present; images from the magnificent series La Passante du Siècle by Richard Avedon staring Stephanie Seymour coming from the Egoïste Collection, Helmut Newton’s Elsa Peretti as a Bunny, as well as prints from Irving Penn’s celebrated Small Trades series.

The sale brought in a combined total of €2,099,750 with the sale of 90 lots. The most expensive was Helmut Newton’s “Elsa Peretti as a Bunny”, Costume by Halston, New York, 1975 which had an initial estimate of €120,000-€180,000 and sold far above it’s top estimate for €400,000.
Irving Penn rounded out the top three with two prints from his Small Trades series including Lorry Washers, London, 1951 which sold for €118,750 and News Seller, London, 1950, selling for €112,500, both outperforming their estimates of €60,000-€80,000.
