Christie’s Paris Photographies Results
Scheduled seemingly at the last minute, Christie’s Paris hosted a photography auction on the 9th November bringing nearly 100 lots of ‘property by significant 20th century photographers including Pierre Dubreuil, Peter Lindbergh, Helmut Newton and Irving Penn alongside contemporary artists such as Thomas Struth, Robert Polidori and Candida Höfer’.
The auction brought in a sales total of 1,397,500 euros ($1,583,828).
The highest priced lot was Peter Lindbergh’s Mathilde on the Eiffel Tower (Hommage a Marc Riboud), Paris, 1989, which hugely outperformed its initial estimate of €60,000-80,000 by selling for €200,000. A collection of prints by Helmut Newton was the second most expensive lot, gaining a surprisingly modest hammer price of €118,750 after an estimate of €100,000-150,000. Finally, in third was a painterly photograph from Philip-Lorca Dicorcia; W, March 2000, #12, 2000, which had an estimate of €50,000-70,000 and sold for €68,750.
Christie’s November Photographs sale compares significantly with Sotheby’s, which struggled to raise a million dollars in sales. the auction was Christie’s final photographs auction of the season and year.
