Christie’s MoMA: Walker Evans Auction Results; 2018
This week saw the end of the week-long online auction of Christie’s MoMA: Walker Evans, a sale of over 70 prints from the Museum of Modern Art’s Walker Evans collection. This auction was an opportunity to buy some relatively cheap prints from a well-regarded documentary photographer with estimates ranging from $3,000 to $15,000 and hammer prices as low as $1,125 (£787 €911).
The most expensive lot was Evans’ Alabama Tenant Farmer (Floyd Burroughs), Hale County, Alabama which sold for $13,750, outperforming arguably Evans’ most famous work Allie Mae Burroughs, Hale County, Alabama (featured) which sold for $10,625. Coming in third was Main Street, Saratoga Springs, New York, which had an estimate of $10,000-$15,000 and sold for $10,000.
The auction realised a sales total of $236,375, and is Christie’s final photography auction this April, their next photography sale will come in May in London.
