Christie’s final MoMA Photographs Auction
Last year, Christie’s announced that it would be selling 400 hundred photographic prints from the Museum of Modern Art’s photography collection in a series of auctions. Next week sees the final instalment of these auctions with an online sale of photographs by Walker Evans. Bidding will begin on 3rd April and finish on 11th April.
Christie’s detail of the auction:
MoMA: Walker Evans is the 6th online-only auction of photographs from The Museum of Modern Art, New York, being sold to benefit the acquisition fund for the Museum’s Department of Photography. The photographs in this auction represent examples from some of the most well-known themes examined by seminal American photographer Walker Evans (1903–1975). Featured heavily in this group are images from throughout the American South made by Evans for the Resettlement Administration in the mid-1930s. Also included in this group are portraits; architectural studies from New England circa 1930; and images from Evans’ 1933 trip to Cuba. Most of the photographs in this sale were printed in conjunction with the large retrospective of Evans’ work presented by the Museum in 1971. Estimates start at $3,000 and will be on view from March 30 – April 6th at Rockefeller Center.
There are 109 lots available, including Allie Mae Burroughs, Hale County, Alabama, 1936, one of Evans’ most famous works. Estimates range from $3,000 to $15,000. To browse all available lots, and to register to bid, click here.
