Bonhams Photographs Auction, April 2017
Bonham’s most recent photography auction (Photographs, 25 April 2017) included prints by a host of marquee-name photographers such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Edward Mubridge, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Eugene Atget, Paul Strand, Ansel Adams, W. Eugene Smith, Man Ray, Robert Frank, Richard Avedon, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Peter Beard, David Lachapelle, and a Robert Mapplethorpe self-portrait. The Auction took place in New York with 111 lots for sale, realising $463,812.
Highest selling lots were:
Ansel Adams’ The Grand Tetons and the Snake River, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming which sold for $60,000.
A signed and numbered (6/10) Robert Mapplethorpe gelatine silver print Self-Portrait with Horns selling for $52,500.
Edward Muybridge Panorama of San Francisco from California St. Hill $50,000. This was an ’11-part panorama albumen prints, mounted accordian-style on 11 leaves of buff paper, mounted to a single piece of linen; with the photographer’s credit, title, and copyright in letterpress on the central plate; the whole enclosed in 4to, dark red cloth covers with the title and photographer’s name in gilt.’
