Auctions most likely to break records
After sporadic photography sales since the turn of the new year, April will see a slew of auctions specialising in photography prints from all three leading auction houses. The first of these auctions will be hosted by Christie’s New York on Friday 6th April. This auction has prints from Richard Avedon, Peter Beard and Ansel Adams, with estimates ranging from $150,000 to $500,000. This is Christie’s premier photography auction this year after a smattering of specialist auctions (such as the MoMA: Bill Brandt and Garry Winograd auctions). Prints from this auction will be viewable at Christie’s Rockefeller Centre space from 30th March to 5th April. View the auction’s catalogue here.
Phillips hosts its main photography auction on 9th April in New York with 233 lots from photographers such as Peter Beard, Andreas Gursky, Edward Steichen and Robert Capa, with estimates ranging from $1,500 – $700,000. Prints from this auction are available to view in Phillips’ Park Avenue space from 31st March to 8th April. View the auction’s catalogue here.
Sotheby’s has seen the most activity when it comes to photography sales this year but presents its main photography auction on 10th April in New York with 90 lots available from photographers such as William Henry Fox Talbot, Man Ray, Robert Frank and William Eggleston with estimates ranging from $1,000 to $250,000. Prints from this auction will be available to view at Sotheby’s New York space on 4th April to 9th April. View the auction’s catalogue here.
Spring often sees a headlining sale for photography, and as such, these three main auctions are all vying for a potential entry into the ‘most expensive photographs sold at auction’ list, particularly after a year that saw five entries.
Other upcoming auctions include:
MoMA: Walker Evans, Christie’s Online, 3rd – 11th April
The Yamakawa Collection of Twentieth Century Photographs, Christie’s New York, 6th April
A Beautiful Life: Photographs from the Collection of Leland Hirsch, Sotheby’s New York, 10th April
