MoMA Photography Auction Results

This week saw the first three of four auctions of MoMA’s Photographs at Christie’s New York. The first auction to get underway was the ‘Henri Cartier-Bresson’ auction, which took place online and realised $316,375 with the highest bid going to the infamous ‘Behind the Gare St.Lazare, Paris’ with a hammer price of $81,250 ($56,000 over its top estimate of $25,000).

The second auction to begin was the ‘Photographs including property from the Museum of Modern Art’ auction, which saw a total of $3,321,500 in sales. This took place at Christie’s Rockefeller Centre location, with the highest bid going to Peter Beard’s ‘Orphaned Cheetah Cubs, Mweiga, near Nyeri, Kenya, March 1968’ which sold for $672,500 ($172,500 above its top estimate of $500,000), a world record for the artist. This auction saw 7 lots sold for over $100,000 including works from Irving Penn, Robert Mapplethorpe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Man Ray and Ansel Adams.

The final MoMA auction to take place this week was the ‘MoMA: Pictorialism into Modernism’ auction, which took place online and realised a total of $436,500 with the highest bid going to Constantin Brancusi’s ‘Princesse X, 1916’ print, which sold for $100,000 ($20,000 above it’s top estimate).
