Sotheby’s Photographs Auction Results, 2017
This autumn’s Photographs sale at Sotheby’s realised a sale total of $2,901,375. The earliest photographic portrait of a president was available at the auction and became the highest priced item with a hammer price of $360,5000. The John Quincy Adams portrait, photographed by Philip Haas in 1843, had been estimated to sell for $150,000 – $250,000, and sold for $110,500 more than it’s maximum estimate. Other sales included Dorothea Lange’s ‘White Angel Breadline’ which had an estimate of $70,000-$90,000 and sold for $106,250.
