Phillips Photographs Auction Results, 2021
While Sotheby’s and Christie’s have been and gone with their first photography auctions of autumn, Phillips saved their photographs for a bumper Photographs auction in New York with over 240 lots on offer. The auction, which took place on 7 October, is set to be the last photography auction this month, with no more sales set until mid-November in London. Combined with Phillips’ Reframing Beauty auction, the auction house brought in a sales total of $5,612,292.
Ansel Adams came first with The Tetons and the Snake River, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, with an initial estimate of $100,000 to $150,000 and selling for $289,800. Peter Beard was second with Prometheus figure with vultures feeding . . . Bacon Studio @ 7 Reece Mews, London SW7 which outperformed its initial estimate of $120,000-$180,000 by selling for $207,900. In third place was Robert Frank’s U.S. 285, New Mexico which also outperformed its initial estimate of $80,000-$120,000 by gaining a hammer price of $201,600.
