Sotheby’s Photographies & Photographs Online Results

Sotheby’s held two photography-specific auctions in Paris at the start of this month with Photographies hosting 106 lots from artists such as Man Ray, Robert Frank and Diane Arbus, to name a few. The auction took place on 8th November to coincide with Paris Photo, the annual photography festival that takes place in the French capital.

The auction closed with a sales total of €1,512,125.

The most expensive lot was a set of 23 prints by Thomas Struth from the Unconscious Places. The lot was expected to sell for €100,000-€150,000 and was a even hammer price of €125,000.

The second most expensive lot was a print by Cindy Sherman titled Untitled 103, which was captured in 1983 and had an original estimate of €80,000-€120,000 and raising a €100,000 hammer price.

Wolfgang Tillmans took the third slot with the sale of Bronzino, 2015 which was estimated to sell for €70,000-€90,000 and reached €87,500.

At the same time, Sotheby’s Paris also hosted an online auction from 4th-14th of November: Photographs Online. The online auctions are notorious for affordable lots and did not disappoint with one lot selling for as little as €750. The auction consisted of 50 lots from artists such as Sally Mann, Brassai and Andy Warhol.

The auction accrued €128,250 in sales, and saw the top three most expensive lots taken by photography collections.

The most expensive lot was a set of 51 lithographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto selling for €18,750 after a estimate of €12,000-€18,000. The second most expensive lot was a collection of 64 photogravures by Germaine Krull which reached a hammer price of €12,500 after an estimate of €10,000-€15,000, while a set of 56 prints depicting Mexico City from 1903-1919 by Edmond Hamel came in third with a hammer price of €10,000 (estimate of €8,000-€12,000).
