Phillips Autumn Photographs

October has arrived and so too autumn’s photography auctions. The month’s sales have kicked off with Phillips’ Photographs auction, which took place on the first day of the month in New York.

The sale brought together 250 photographic lots from artists such as Bernice Abbott, Hannah Wilke, Robert Frank, Marina Abramovic, Irving Penn and Steven Klein.

At the close of sales Phillips brought in $3,534,000 along with several world records including a world auction record for Hannah Wilke whose S.O.S. Starification Object Series (Performalist Self-Portrait with Les Wollam) took the top spot as the most expensive sale at the auction, selling for $225,000.

There were four lots that sold for over $100,000 including the late Robert Frank’s Parade, Hoboken, New Jersey which saw a hammer price of $162,500, followed by another 1955 work of Frank’s; Trolley, New Orleans, which sold for $150,000. In fact, three of the top ten lots were prints from Robert Frank.
