Sotheby’s Bent Auction Results
On 27th June Sotheby’s held an auction celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, with an array of paintings, photographs, manuscripts and prints. The auction brought in a sales total of $1,153,500.

What began on 28 June 1969 changed the narrative of the LGBTQ movement, and that story continues today. In recognition of what is believed to be the largest international LGBTQ pride celebration, Stonewall 50 / WorldPride, Sotheby’s New York has brought together an interdisciplinary array of works informed by the LGBTQ experience as reflected in the arts from the 19th Century to the present.
There were 30 photographic lots available in this auction from artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Catherine Opie, Andy Warhol and Annie Leibovitz (featured).
The most expensive photographic sale was Peter Hujar’s Robert Levithan at Rehoboth Beach, which had an original estimate of $10,000-$15,000 and a hammer price of $27,500. In second place was Catherine Opie’s Dyke, which was estimated to sell for between $20,000-$30,000 and sold for $22,500. Third place was Horace Bristol’s PBY Blister Gunner, Rescue at Rabal estimated to reach $10,000-$15,000 and achieving a hammer price of $18,750.
