Sotheby’s Photographies Results, Nov
Following on from auctions from Phillips and Christie’s, Sotheby’s has hosted their November photography auctions starting with Photographies at their headquarters in Paris.
With 75 lots available from iconic artists like Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Man Ray, and French photographers including Eugene Atget, Joseph Philbert Girault de Prangey and Edouard Boubet, the sale brought in a total of €870,875 ($987,834).
Wolfgang Tillmans’ Park Work set was expected to perform well at this auction with an original estimate of €80,000 to €120,000. The work is a collection of three unique prints created by Tillmans by hand in his darkroom using shots from 2000, making them one of a kind. The prints sold together for €100,000 making them the second highest hammer price at this auction. The most expensive lot was a surprise to many. Constantin Brancusi’s Vue d’atelier claimed the top spot by selling for €106,250, double its top estimate of €50,000.
Coming third was Joseph Philibert Girault de Prangey’s Portrait d’une jeune femme, fleur a la main – a daguerréotype from 1842 which out-performed its original estimate of €8,000-€12,000 by selling for €35,000.
