Sotheby’s Modernism Auction
Not to be outmanoeuvred by Christie’s, Sotheby’s is also hosting some photography auctions in Paris this week starting with Modernism: Photographs from a Distinguished Private Collection.
Though photographs from private collections tend to sell for lower hammer prices than other sales, there are actually several lots with high estimates such as Andre Kertesz’s Cello Study an unconventional print with an estimate of 400,000 to 600,000 EUR, followed by Paul Strand’s Fern, Early Morning Dew, Georgetown, Maine with an estimate of 200,000 to 300,000 and recent auction darling Man Ray, whose Alberto Giacometti portrait is estimated at 80,000 to 120,000 EUR.
All the lots from this sale are monochromatic, pre-21st-century prints from marquee names such as Ansel Adams, Edward Steichen (featured and above) and Brassai. See all 12 lots on Sotheby’s dedicated page here where you can also register to bid.
